The Mountain
School is situated on several acres of lush green, cared for by Jorge. Your days here are filled with flowers, hummingbirds, beautiful views, and sometimes even a light shower of ash when the volcano nearby happens to erupt.
Besides taking care of the school's property and coffee plants, Jorge takes care of sick students with herbs and teas from his garden. He tends a large herbal garden and is a wealth of information about herbal cures.
He studied formally for several years and has practiced for many more - and is an important health resource for people in the community as well.
Jorge's Most Requested Herbal Remedies
Verbena
Good for fevers Boil 15 leaves in 4 cups of water for 20 minutes Drink one cup each time
Basil
Yes, you can use basil for more than pesto! It will treat insomnia as well as coughs and throat infections Boil 15 leaves in 4 cups of water for 20 minutes Drink a cup 3x per day
Aloe
It's commonly used on burns, but works just as well on itchy insect bites - helpful information when you're in Guatemala
Mint
Those darn intestinal problems - but Jorge is always ready for sick students with his teas. For diarrhea make a tea of 5 mint leaves and 10 sage leaves in 4 cups of water; boil for 20 minutes; drink throughout the day For vomiting, substitute verbena for the sage
Plantain
Who would know
that the weed we all try to eliminate in our lawns is one that Jorge
cultivates! Plantain has an antibiotic effect and is
wonderful for cuts. Make the tea with 10 leaves and wash the cut with the liquid
to wash out dirt and germs. Or, chop it up and make a paste with water to cover the cut
Cypress
Try this for sore
throats Make the tea with 5-6 sprigs of cypress, and yes use 4 cups
of water, etc. Gargle with the tea and enjoy the relief You can add 10 verbena leaves if you want something
stronger
Limes
Jorge
guarantees that this is a 60 minute cure for constipation Combine the juice of 2 limes and 1/2 cup of cooking oil, drink
it down and within the hour you will enjoy relief
Jorge has many
more proven remedies from his herb garden - if you'd like to know more about
his craft and his healing skills, the best way to learn is to study at the Mountain School. Jorge is there everyday,
